5 Ways to Keep Skin Healthy in the Sun - Harben House

There are so many fun activities to do in the summer sun! Whether your favorite summer activity is sunbathing, swimming, reading on the beach, or volleyball, make sure you are keeping your skin healthy and safe.

There are many problems directly related to harmful rays emitted from the sun. These health concerns include topical issues such as age spots, wrinkles, or discolorations. Or sometimes these harmful rays can cause life-threatening issues like sun poisoning or skin cancer.

Read our tips below for keeping skin vibrant and most importantly healthy in the summer sun.

Tip 1) Dress the Part

What you wear plays a huge role into how protected your skin will be in the sun. If you are planning on relaxing out on the beach for a day, we recommend making sure you have a hat and sunglasses. Wearing a hat to the beach isn’t just stylish, it helps protect your skin from harmful rays reaching your face. Shades, like hats, are not just fashionable, but they offer sun protection. Wearing sunglasses helps protect your delicate skin around your eyes. Harmful sun rays around your eyes can lead to future problems such as cataracts and macular degeneration.

Whenever possible wear long sleeves. We get that it’s hot out and sometimes long sleeves or long pants simply aren’t feasible. Bring a swimsuit cover or shawl of some sort to protect your skin whenever possible. Your skin will benefit from your creating your shade by what you wear.

Tip 2) Moisturize Often

It’s true! Moisturizing is one of the main keys to unlocking healthy skin. No matter what skin type you have, making sure your skin stays moisturized is crucial. One of the best ways to give your skin that extra protection is to use a moisturizer with added SPF protection. A moisturizer with SPF protection will play double duty helping to replenish your skin and also give you that added protection from harmful UV rays.

Tip 3) Apply Sunscreen

Besides moisturizing, you’ll need to make sure you are still applying sunscreen, especially if you plan on being in direct sunlight. There are many different sunscreen options available on the market today. Apply sunscreen as a convenient, all-over spray with EltaMD UV Aero. Or if you are looking for a sheer sunscreen that won’t clog your pores, try SkinMedica Essential Defense as your first line of defense against harmful UV rays. You can apply sunscreen like your makeup with Colorescience Sunforgettable. As you can see there are many sunscreen options out there so you can easily find the perfect one for your summer activity of choice.

Tip 4) Pay Attention to the Clock

For optimal skin protection, watch the clock and be sure to reapply your sunscreen. The sun is usually at its peak between 10 am to 2 pm. If you plan on partaking in summer activities during those prime sun hours, be sure to reapply sunscreen often. We recommend that you reapply your sunscreen every 2 hours.

If you know your skin needs extra protection you might want to consider reapplying more often and pay attention the SPF in your sunscreen. If you are planning a day out in the sun you should use a sunscreen that has an SPF level of 30 or higher, which filters out up to 97% of the harmful UV rays. If you are looking for more coverage SPF 50 filters up to 98% of these harmful rays.

Find a schedule and SPF level that works best for you and your skin.

Tip 5) Drink Plenty of Water

Our last tip is something you should be doing year-round, not just during the summer months. The amount of water you drink plays a huge factor into your skin’s health. When skin is well hydrated, it resists chapping or becoming flaky. If you are planning a day at the beach, plan on bringing plenty of water in your beach bag. Drinking enough water will also help ensure you don’t become dehydrated in the summer heat.
